Member for Chifley Ed Husic has welcomed the announcement that the Greater Western Sydney Giants will join the newly formed AFL-sanctioned, AFL-supported female national league.
The AFL has finally joined the ranks of soccer, cricket and Olympic sports in recognising women athletes deserve to be on the national sports stage and is making sure they get an equal platform, Mr Husic said.
This is a defining moment in the history of Australian Rules football, and as an enthusiastic supporter of the Greater Western Sydney Giants, I was proud to hear that the team won a licence to play in the newly formed AFLs womens league.
I welcome the Greater Western Sydney Giants commitment to the promotion and development of a female team to compete in the National Womens League (NWL).
And its great that the Giants proclaim how proud they are to be flag bearers for aspiring female footballers in NSW and the ACT.
This is one of the most significant announcements in the games history and certainly one of the most important things the Giants will ever do, Giants chief executive David Matthews said.
The Giants, along with other AFL teams, are now working with the AFL on planning for the inaugural NWL season with further details of the 2017 NWL competition to be released in due course.
