Today, twenty years on, we pause to remember the approximately 8,000 Bosniak Muslim men and boys brutally massacred in Srebrenica and its surrounds.
Families were destroyed, and generations were lost.
The horror that is felt when recognising the sheer numbers of lives lost in such a short time is matched by a complete disbelief that some could commit such an atrocity in the first place.
While much has been done to improve relations and move beyond the pain, we must always be mindful of the overwhelming need to build and maintain strong, diverse communities. Communities united by acommitment to respect others, value the rule of law, and preserve social harmony and cohesion.
The Shadow Parliamentary Secretary to the Leader of the Opposition, Michael Danby, is representing Labor at commemorations inBosnia and Herzegovina.
